Heat Strengthened Glass

Choose high-performance and dependable Heat-Strengthened Glass from one of the UK’s leading glass suppliers

Heat-Strengthened Glass is treated with controlled heating and cooling to increase strength and thermal resistance. It is less intense than fully toughened glass but stronger than annealed glass, making it suitable for applications needing durability without full tempering.

Enhanced Thermal Resistance

Resists thermal stress and temperature variations better than standard glass, reducing the risk of breakage in sun-exposed areas.

Controlled Breakage Pattern

Cracks into large, less dangerous pieces—ideal for laminated assemblies where glass is bonded to an interlayer.

Reduced Optical Distortion

Compared to fully toughened glass, it maintains better flatness and optical clarity, making it ideal for large façades.

Perfect for Lamination

Commonly used in laminated safety glass, as it retains shape and strength post-breakage when bonded to interlayers.

Applications

It does not shatter into small fragments like toughened glass, but instead cracks in larger pieces—making it ideal for Laminated applications where the glass is bonded to an interlayer for safety.

Heat-Strengthened Glass is widely used in various applications, including:

Spandrel Panels

Used behind opaque parts of curtain walls, where strength and thermal performance are important but full tempering is unnecessary.

Laminated Safety Glass Assemblies

Often combined with interlayers in multi-pane laminates for enhanced performance in structural or acoustic applications.

High-Rise Façades and Structural Glazing

Provides the necessary strength and thermal resistance required in large glass façades without the stress distortion .

Manufacturing Process

Cutting and Preparation

Raw float glass is first cut to the required size and edges are polished or treated based on the application. This is essential because once heat-strengthened, the glass cannot be cut or modified.

Controlled Cooling (Quenching)

Unlike fully toughened glass, heat-strengthened glass is cooled at a slower rate using air blowers. This controlled cooling introduces balanced surface and edge compression, enhancing the strength of the glass

Inspection and Quality Control

The finished glass is inspected for optical clarity, surface defects, and dimensional accuracy. It may also undergo stress testing to ensure it meets industry standards for heat-strengthened performance.
